Still Alive

It's been so long since I've posted. I wouldn't be surprised if this little blog didn't make the end-of-Google-Reader-cut for most folks. S'okay. I really just wanted to write this while the details were still fresh in my mind. In the future, I may not want to remember the details but that's when the delete post option comes in handy.

This past Wednesday wound down like any other day. We fed the kids, bathed them, tucked them in after reading way more books than what was originally agreed upon. Matt and I ate dinner and talked about our day. Around 8 pm, Hew came downstairs, half asleep, complaining he was cold. Matt took him back up to his room and tucked him in extra tight as he inherited my tendencies to kick off all the covers in his sleep. Then around 10 pm, Hew got up again and came into our room while I was getting ready for bed. As I carried him back to his room, I  noticed he felt a little warm but he had complained about a stuffy nose that day so I dismissed it as the onset of a cold. "Probably from his kissing spree of random poles at the park," I said to Matt. He's a smoocher, that kid. About an hour later, Matt was on his way upstairs when he found Hew sitting on the steps. Matt scooped him up and was just about to scold him for getting up when he started shaking.

I was woken up by a hysterical husband who came charging into our room with our son in his arms. I watched in denial as the tiny body of my 3 year old convulsed and twitched. His mouth started to foam and his lips turned blue. I looked into his eyes searching for my sweet baby boy only to find a lifeless stare. While Matt frantically screamed, "WHAT'S WRONG WITH HIM?! WHAT DO I DO?!" I reached for my cell and dialed 911. When the dispatcher asked, "What's your emergency?" my response was almost involuntary. "I think my son is having a seizure." When the paramedics came, they were a vision to me. I don't mean to be cheesy or cliche but those men in uniform were like knights in shining armor riding in on a white horse with flashing lights. It was then that the reality of it all finally sank in and I became the hysterical mother you see in movies.

Hew suffered a febrile seizure. It only lasted a couple minutes but it truly felt like an eternity. We stayed at the hospital overnight where they monitored his temperature to make sure it didn't creep back up. His strep test came back negative and chest x-rays looked great. The saint of an ER doc (he answered alllllll my type-A questions with nothing but kindness) thought that Hew developed an upper respiratory infection (hence the stuffy nose and red throat) which led to his fever. Even though it was low grade and Hew has had higher fevers before, it was the quick spike that led to the febrile seizure (a learning from one of my annoying questions). Hew was back to his usual happy, chatty self before we even left the hospital. Despite a warning that he wouldn't have much of an appetite in the coming days, my son asked for pancakes and bacon as soon as we got home and polished his plate. He doesn't even remember the ambulance ride.

I had read that seizures are not uncommon among young children when they develop a fever and that it's partly because their brains are growing and developing at such a rapid rate, but all logic and reason vanished when I witnessed it happening to my baby. That sight is branded into my brain and I see a vivid replay of it every time I close my eyes. I can only hope the image will fade away with time. I look forward to the day that I won't be scared to open my son's door in fear of the worst, that my heart won't stop every time my child gets a fever.

Look Who's Talking

"You'll never guess what comes after 3...
4! I know, crazy right?"

"Take a whiff of my new aftershave."

"What the heck just happened?"

"Listen bro, I love you and all but don't do that again. You almost messed up my 'do."

"It ain't easy lookin' this good."

"Oh yea? Well then GET OFF MY BUMBO!!!"

And in matters of a pinch more importance than make-believe banter between a toddler and a 2 month old, articles like this one is one of the many reasons why I'm a huge fan of Jenn.

Have a stupendous weekend erryone!

Rub a Dub Dub

In the spirit of getting clean, a few things I must confess:
  • I laughed way too hard at this considering it's at the expense of an infant.
  • While checking out at Sprouts, I may have forgotten to tell the chashier that the bag of grapes weighed far more before my son ate nearly half of it while I perused the avocados.
  •  I ate all the peanut butter M&M's then blamed it on daddy when H asked for his post nap treat.
  • I find myself being far too critical of my post partum body.
  • Then I feel guilty for stressing about something so trivial when I have countless blessings to focus on.
  • I started off finishing the little bit of Annie's mac & cheese that H didn't finish for lunch and ended up with a pot just short of licked clean.

Now that that's off my chest, I'm off to enjoy my first bottle glass of wine since giving birth. With my luck, Sweet P will wake up after my first sip.

Finally Warming Up

We've seen a drastic improvement in sibling relations in our household since this unfortunate incident a few weeks back. I stepped away from (a tightly strapped to the changing pad) sweet P for a moment to restock her table-side diaper inventory when, upon my return, I was greeted with this sweet sight:

No, he's not giving her a noogie. Don't let the look on his face and her flailing limbs fool you. He's actually brushing her mohawk very carefully into place while saying, "Hi princess. Here you go pretty Penny."

Can I please just freeze time so they stay like this forever? Ok maybe fast forward until H is potty trained and then freeze?

H the Fashion Blogger

After catching me having a photo shoot for this fun little project, H decided to join in on the challenge.
Check out his monochrome look complete with John Deere accessory.

My POV

On a more serious note, this rapping priest (wha??? I know) pretty much covers what I think about this video that's been all over FB lately.

Earning his keep

My first born took on the role of court jester during one of the nearly hourly nursing sessions the new princess has been demanding of me lately.

On an unrelated note, I learned that someone found my blog using the keywords:

strip her down for inspection.

I'm sure that party was highly disappoitned.

Day in a nutshell

From up to down:
  1. As of late I'm a milk factory trying to keep up with this demanding customer.
  2. That chair used to be somewhat upright. Not no mo. I didn't want to break the news that he surpassed the max weight limit for it a year ago. Could you imagine having to be the flight attendant who has to tell a passenger they need two seats? I would quit on the spot.
  3. Quasi-healthy lunch to make me feel better about the baked ziti with meatballs I had for dinner last night. The following recipe involves precise measurements so be sure to be exact.
    • Throw some chopped chicken breasts, apples, celery, red onions and parsley into a big bowl.
    • In a separate not-so-big bowl, whisk together equal parts sour cream and red wine vinegar, a smidgen of mayo (NOT Miracle Whip Unless you like disgusting in a jar.) and a pinch each of salt & pepper.
    • Pour dressing over chicken mixture and toss to combine.
    • Stir in chopped walnuts and grapes.
    • Eat it with some greens, make a sandwich out of it or just eat it out of the bowl you made it in (utensils optional). I won't judge.

The milkman, perhaps?

Before I completely beat the side-by-side-picture-post dead horse (oops too late), I came across these two snapshots.

Believe it or not, these babes came from the same set of parents. They also weighed the exact same at birth, down to the ounce. They both like to pass the time by loudly grunting then flatulating at all hours of the day. Apparently Mylicon is no match for my kimchi-flavored breast milk.

Now & Then

Then: 1 mo old at Costco
Now: 2 years old on Christmas morning

Now and Then was one of my favorite movies circa my tween years. Mostly because of a hard core crush on Devon Sawa. Remember him? He was also in the last 18 seconds of Casper. I hated strongly disliked Christina Ricci for getting to smooch him in not ONE but TWO movies. To my delight, Rosie 'Cray Cray' O'Donnell played the adult version of her character in that movie and I convinced myself that the hussy really would grow up to be overweight with a dash of masculine. Ah the crazy logic of a 12 year old. Unfortunately, Mr. Sawa's boyish good looks didn't exactly translate into manish good looks, a fate similar to that of another 90's teen heart throb.

Anywho, enough random 90's chatter. I have chicken enchiladas to get out of the oven and inhale.

Happy 2012!

And the worst mother of the year award goes to...

Me.

The other day, after spending a thrilling morning at Sprouts and Costco (my life is FILLED with glamour, don't hate), we come home and my Sweet P is loudly expressing her hunger. I had switched up my usual milk-stained nursing tank and yoga pants for a sweater, jeans and an actual bra for our outing so I set my crying P down on the bed while I changed back into uniform. As I was washing my hands I heard H come into the room asking, "Where's my baby sister?" then her cries started to sound muffled. H often tries to cover her with a blanket to keep her warm but overshoots and ends up covering a part of her face so I wasn't TOO concerned about his intentions.
Turns out I should've been.
I quickly dried my hands and turned the corner just in time to see my 3 week old infant
fall
off
the
bed
onto 2 pillows and a blanket that were miraculously stacked perfectly to break her fall. Fortunately we have a low platform bed so that coupled with the landing pad, she fell no more than 5 or so inches but I was hysterical nonetheless. She didn't cry any harder than she had been before the fall and stopped as soon as I picked her up so my hysteria calmed down a smidgen but didn't completely go away until I stripped her down and inspected every inch of her pink body to make sure she was still perfect.

Now in H's defense, I didn't actually SEE him push her off the bed but it's either that or our little girl is a baby prodigy and already rolling over. Since the latter is highly unlikely, all contact between H and Sweet P will be under extremely close supervision. Or I need to stop putting her down anywhere other than her bassinet even if it's just for a second.
Lesson learned.
And to think I thought he was adjusting well.

P.S. If child protective services calls me, I'll have a very small group of suspects to narrow down. 33 as of today to be more precise so don't get any ideas. Nobody likes a tattle tale.

Nothing in Life is Free

Just check out these posing skills.

Snow white and her muscle-bound body guard.

Spidey has the cutest butt ever.

Don't be stingey man.

Technically this was H's second Halloween but first time trick or treating and he picked up the whole taking-candy-from-strangers thing a little too quickly for my liking. Some houses went a little decoration happy with shady looking figures even I didn't want to stare at for too long but my little Spidey didn't even blink a long eyelashed eye and waddled right up to the front door with his cuzzos to get his goods. He made out with a pretty decent stash, one that mommy will be raiding as soon as I'm done typing this enthralling post.

While Jorts put our mini superhero to bed, I sat outside to pass out candy (not only to ensure our bowl didn't get a five-finger discount but to also keep the little heathens from ringing the doorbell). To my surprise and extreme annoyance, kids would come up to me with their bags/pillowcases/buckets held out and....stare.
No "Trick or treat."
No "Happy Halloween."
Just blink, blink, stare.
The first few times I smiled anyway, complimented them on their costumes and plopped a few pieces of candy into their bags. But as the night wore on and my patience wore thin I just started staring right back at them. Most kids got the hint and would mutter "Trick or treat" under their breaths but some had a hard time grasping this complex idea. So I would just pop an M&M into my mouth and continue our staring session. Half a dozen kids walked away tonight a little confused and maybe even a little scared of the mute preggo lady who didn't share any of her candy but I think I did them a favor. I taught them the ever-valuable lesson that nothing in life is free. You better work for your candy on Halloween.

Happiness Is

For this toddler: picking the sprinkles off his donut.

For this mama: watching this toddler pick the sprinkles off his donut.

...and maybe getting a bite or two of said donut.

No Hands in the Shape of a Heart

Because that ish is played out.
So we used tinted chapstick instead.
Our little family of 3 + 1 pending got some pretty pictures taken by the oh-so-talented Niomee Baker the other weekend. I obsessively checked the mail several times once a day until the CD came. I lurrrved how H's 8 month pictures turned out last year and she definitely didn't disappoint this time around either. Here are a few of my favs.

WARNING: Picture Overload

If posts with a 529:1 picture to word ratio is not your cup o' tea then this probably isn't the post for you. In fact, this probably isn't the blog for you. So click away now if my disclaimer applies. Otherwise, proceed.

Temperatures have dropped below 100 degrees, the A/C doesn't kick in until lunch time and Halloween decorations are popping up all over our neighborhood. What does this mean? Fall in AZ! We took H to his first pumpkin patch on Saturday and he...had...the time of his li-i-ife! (I might have watched a little Dirty Dancing over the weekend too.)

1. Welcome to Mother Nature's Farm! Glad I came across this little ruby on the world wide webiverse. They have apple & peach picking throughout the year too!
2. H's face when he's focused on something. In this case, that would be running like a maniac from one side of the jump house to the other. That little tongue kills me.
3. & 4. "On the left you have some trees..on your right, the parking lot." It was the most exciting hayride I have ever been on.
5. Isn't black hair supposed to be the dominant trait???
6. Guess not.
7. H trying to break free from my death grip.
8. "Trees up high!"
9. Could my jaw BE any bigger??
10. Big Betsy
11. Mmm, bacon.
12. & 13.   Re-enactment of The Fugitive
14. & 15. Some more pictures
16. Check out my sweet manual setting skizzills.
17. H kept saying "Butt itchy"
18. He's a flirt.
